Republic P-47D Thunderbolt 'Razorback' Walkaround
Detailed photos for scale modelers from the EAA Airventure
Republic Aviation produced the P-47 Thunderbolt from 1941 to 1945, and it served as a high-altitude fighter and fighter-bomber. One of the primary fighters for the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, the P-47 housed a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp 18-cylinder radial engine up front with a turbosupercharger for high-altitude performance. Known for being able to take a pounding during combat and deliver bombs, rockets, and lead from eight .50-caliber machine guns, the ungainly-looking aircraft was nicknamed the "Jug" and employed by other Allied air forces during the war, including France, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Mexico, and Brazil. Here are color photos FineScale Modeler took of a P-47D Razorback at the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Airventure in July 2024.
