On Oct. 2, 2022, the Classic Plastic Model Club held its 28th annual model car exhibition in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Modelers from the northeastern U.S., Nova Scotia, and even Nebraska entered 358 models into the competition. Here are some of the standout models seen at the show.
Bruce Morris spent two months building his Atlantis Models 1/16 scale “Green Elephant” Chevy Vega Funny Car. He sectioned the body over the frame, moved the engine forward ¼ inch, custom-printed the decals, and fashioned custom debris panels. He painted with HOK Kandy Green over a gold base.
Built for the Box Stock category, this Monogram 1/24 scale Bugatti Type 35B arrived with modeler Dave Perkins. He painted the body French Blue and dressed it as a Grand Prix racer.
Emerson Fittipaldi was Guilherme Rosa’s first Formula 1 hero, so it makes sense that he’d build an Ace Models 1/20 scale Team Fittipaldi F8 SKOL as his first multimedia kit. Guilherme replaced the single-piece resin chassis pan/seat with modified plastic parts and airbrushed the body Zero Paint Yellow.
Tamiya has a wide selection of 1/12 scale motorcycles, and Tim Rhine built a Yamaha XV1600 Road Star box stock. The model took him six weeks to complete.
For his 1/24 scale car hauler, Todd Ryan started with an MPC 1/25 scale ’72 Chevy Racer’s Wedge and extended the frame. He replaced the cab with aftermarket resin, making the truck into a ’78 Dodge extended cab. Todd used spray paints straight from the can, chipped the paint, and replicated a rusty patina for a well-worn look.
Ed daRosa brought “Fast” Eddie Schartman’s colorful Pro Stock 1970 Mercury Comet to life with markings from Slixx Decals and custom-mixed paints. Ed says he was learning a new technique for laying down “contoured” decals while working on the JoHan 1/25 scale kit.
Coming all the way from Nova Scotia, Canada, Rob Russell brought his 1/25 scale 1968 Dodge Dart. Don’t let the faded Tamiya Green paint and Adam Wilder rusty patina fool you: this sleeper has a 6.1-liter Hemi short-block engine from a Revell 2006 Charger under the hood and burns the rubber off Zimmerman wheels.
Reviving an old model, Dave Walker showcased a Renewal 1/25 scale 1966 Jordan Playboy roadster done up in Testors French Blue enamel. Dave replaced the missing wheels and tires with parts from his spares and restored the rest of the model to its former glory.
