Scale Model Basics: How to Remove Parts from the Parts Tree

Cut plastic scale model parts from the tree cleanly and effectively

The first step to building a plastic scale model is to remove parts from the parts tree. Rather than twist, snap, or slice parts free with a hobby knife, use micro-shears (also called sprue cutters) or a razor saw instead. Both of these tools allow you to remove the parts while minimizing the risk of damaging them. They also let you cut closer to the part, which means less time cleaning up with sanding pads or files. Watch the video to see how to use these tools to build your own scale models.

Interested in the tools you saw in action? You can find an excellent pair of sprue cutters here. If you need to add a razor saw to your toolbox, here are a few options to choose from.
